Remembering Michael Jackson
Over the week-end I was “tagged” on Facebook.
This particular tag was a real test for my memory. (Yes, to the far right is Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver. I'm fourth from the left... with the cameras. One loaded with Tri-X and the other with Fujichrome.)
First of all it is a black and white picture. Next, I have black hair in the picture. The two cameras and cassette tape recorder have all either retired or went grey. Finally, Mr. Michael Jackson pictured as he shared what he thought of that particular beverage he was sampling. It was that image that brought the entire evening back into my thoughts.
It was a most pleasant evening as I remember it. A few of us had stopped in nearby McSorley’s for some beer and liverwurst sandwiches. It was the regular meeting of the New York City Homebrewers Club held in what was then called “Brewskies”. The main draw that fine evening was Mr. Michael Jackson. He had just released his “New World Guide to Beer” and was on tour.
The following picture shows your intrepid reporter watching as Michael Jackson signed a copy of the book… “Peter, Best of luck… Michael Jackson”.
(Left to right: Keith Cunningham, unknown, Morgan Wright, Garrett Oliver, Michael Jackson, Peter LaFrance)
It was a long time ago… How long? Well, Andy Griffith as “Matlock” is on the television in the upper right hand corner of the second picture and the inscription was dated… “5 Sept ‘89”
You do the math… I still don’t want to.
