BeerBasics tastes... Blue Point Blueberry Ale

Blue Point Brewing Co. ‎ 161 River Avenue Patchogue, NY 11772-3304 (631) 475-6944(631) 475-6944Preface: This 12 oz. bottle of Blue Point Blueberry Ale was purchased for $2.50(USD) at Peas & Pickles Grocery in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, NY. There was date number on the neck: “1301 21:39 7C”

This particular beer is not unfamiliar to me. In fact, on draft it is one of my favorite fruit beers. In order not to cloud my judgment I therefore choose to taste test this beer at the temperature that it would be served at in most on-premise establishments. (Not quite ice cold but certainly not cellar temperature.)

The following notes are made after a mouth wash with room temperature sparkling water. These notes have not been influenced by reading promotional material or any other review of this brew.

The following are my tasting notes:

Appearance: This is a bright golden yellow not overly carbonated brew that holds up a slender white head of loosely knit bubbles leave a little Belgin lace.

Aroma: After opening the bottle, in about 25 seconds, you knew was a blueberry beer without tasting it. The first actual impression reveals simply a soft fresh blueberry aroma a second visit reveals a soft undertone of toasted grain. The third nosedive actually finds a sort of grassy aroma.

Mouth feel: This is a rather light bodied beer, certainly not overpowering.

Flavor: I tasted this beer at a relatively chilly temperature and so the first impression was naturally cool liquid refreshment. The first flavors to appear are a malty-grainy introduction very closely followed by the trace of blueberries. The second sip reveals little more of the blueberry but there is also a citric tang brought to the palate. The third swig and the blueberries stay slightly in the background but the malt does not altogether step forward. It’s only at the very end you find a touch of hop flavor. You have to look for it.

Finish: The finish to this brew is most pleasantly light leaving an interesting balance between the grain and the berry, and more than encourages a second, third and fourth sip.

Comments: There are number of beers on the market that claim to be summer beers with the addition of passionfruit, lemon, lime and an assortment of other citric fruits. However, to me this truly tastes like summer. It is a light beer without being insipid and the blueberry is just a touch, not overpowering, resulting in a truly pleasant experience rather than the thick viscous fruit flavors often associated with this type of beer.

Food & Beer:  A fresh caught grilled flounder, or any other flaky white ocean fish would certainly complement this beer. If the fish was grilled over woodchips it would be even more of a perfect pairing. It would also be a most pleasant complement to creamy cheeses such as brie or calendar.
