    Gordon Biersch at Navy Yard, DC, Announces Management Team

     WASHINGTON, DC (19 March 2013) – Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant’s April 1 opening at the Navy Yard (100 M Street, SE), will bring together a talented management trio set to firmly establish the new restaurant as a neighborhood beacon, a unique modern-day brewery and restaurant offering a sophisticated yet casual setting. Gordon Biersch veterans, General Manager Brian Beauregard and Executive Chef Tony Blais are joined by Head Brewer Travis Tedrow. 

    With a seating capacity of 226, the 8,290-square-foot Navy Yard Gordon Biersch features a stylish dining room, an outdoor beer garden that seats 88 and a glass-enclosed brewing room.  The spacious bar area will offer plenty of seating as well as numerous high-definition televisions and daily drink and food specials.   The restaurant will offer five freshly brewed Signature Gordon Biersch lagers on tap (Golden Export, Hefeweizen, Czech Lager, Märzen and Schwarzbier) and one seasonal option. 

    Mississippi Passes Bill to Legalize Homebrewing

     “Boulder, CO (19 March, 2013)The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) is pleased to announce that Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant has signed a bill that will effectively legalize homebrewing throughout the state. Mississippi is now the 49th state to permit homebrewing. A Senate version of the bill passed in early February and it was then voted on by the State House of Representatives in March.

    “From our founding fathers to our current President, this country has a long and storied tradition of homebrewing,” said Gary Glass, director of the American Homebrewers Association. “We appreciate the support of all of the homebrewers, the dedicated grassroots efforts of Raise Your Pints and the legislators who have worked so diligently to make homebrewing a reality in Mississippi. We are grateful to Senator John Horhn who introduced this bill and to Governor Bryant for his quick action and support.”

    The 21st Amendment predominantly leaves regulation of alcohol to the states. Therefore, even though homebrewing is federally legal, it is still up to individual states to legalize homebrewing in state codes. Prior to today’s announcement, Mississippi and Alabama were the only two states that did not allow homebrewing. The AHA will continue working with homebrewers in Alabama to legalize homebrewing.

    The hobby of homebrewing has seen exponential growth in recent years. The AHA estimates that more than 1 million Americans brew beer or make wine at home at least once a year. Mississippi is home to an estimated 2,200 homebrewers who may now enjoy brewing without the restrictions of a state-wide ban.”

    Brew Hub announces plans for first brewery in Lakeland, FL

    ST. LOUIS, MO (March 19, 2013):  Brew Hub, a company led by a team of beer industry executives and craft brewing experts, has announced plans for the company’s first brewery in Lakeland, Florida.  The Florida brewery will be the first of at least five planned facilities that will offer craft brewers the opportunity to partner brew their beers on site.”

    Brew Hub was founded by a team of former Anheuser-Busch executives led by Tim Schoen.  Schoen, CEO, Jerry Mullane, President and Mark Greenspahn, Vice President of Operations.  Brew Hub is supported by financing from The Yucaipa Companies of Los Angeles.

    The company will begin building the Lakeland brewery, packaging and cold storage warehouse in April.  The site will operate as a central distribution facility for craft brewers beginning in fall 2013.  The Lakeland facility will deliver beer to wholesalers throughout Florida and the Southeast and will begin brewing beer in summer 2014.

    The Anheuser-Busch “Watered-Down” Beer Story

    A little knowledge or… The Anheuser-Busch “Watered-Down” Beer Story

    The story broke on or about 28 February, as reported by the Houston Chronicle (This Bud may lack some kick, lawsuit alleges).

    Essentially, there are a number of class-action lawsuits alleging that after the take-over of Anheuser-Busch by InBev last year the brewery began “watering down” its beer to less than the alcohol content listed on the label. The basis of these suits is allegations by former employees of Anheuser-Bush that the brewery “waters-down” all of the Anheuser-Bush products.

     A few days ago the staff at CNN tested the alcohol content of Anheuser-Busch beers and found that Budweiser contained 4.94% alcohol by volume (5% stated on the label), Bud Light Lime was 4.13% alcohol by volume (labeled as 4.2%) and Bud Ice weighed in at 5.35%, compared to the label's 5.5% claim.

    This morning The London Telegraph followed the story with “Budweiser maker pokes fun at watering down claims”. Again, the description of the suit basis describes the allegations by the ex-employees of A-B regarding the “watering-down” of the Anheuser-Busch products.

    Now let me note the “little knowledge” alluded to in the title of this piece.

    All “industrial” breweries in the world water-down all of their beers. That is the truth. The rest of the truth is that all “industrial” breweries in the world start out brewing beers that are close to 9.5% alcohol by volume. This allows them to brew less volume with results of greater volume when the product is “watered-dawn” to meet alcohol content requirements. The water is included when the beverage is carbonated. This is done at the bottling/canning/kegging plants. This allows Coors to truthfully claim to “brew” all Coors products with Rocky Mountain water but also allows those ex-employees to make a truthful claim. It is one of those things that the brewing industry leaders would rather not tell the consumer. After all most consumers would rather not be there to see how their hamburger is made would they?

    If you want a really naughty little secret ask the mega-brewers about “streaming”…
