    BeerBasics visits Mayflower Brewing Company

    The Mayflower Brewing Company is tucked away in a small industrial park just outside of downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts. The front entrance is well-marked but not easy to find.

    Only a grain silo in back gives it away.

    Once through the front door we were in the tasting room area and welcomed by retail manager Sarah Richardson.

    After a chance to taste their four year round products…  it was time to visit the brewhouse.

    PALE ALE (Flagship)

    Traditional English pale ales have mild malt character and aroma offset by pronounced hop bitterness. Mayflower Pale Ale is a dry version of this classic beer style. Its bready and toasted malt flavor is balanced by earthy and herbal aromas from two varieties of traditional English and American-grown hops.

    GOLDEN ALE (Our Mildest)

    Mayflower Golden Ale is crisp and dry with a slight malt flavor and a subtle hop spice. This straw-colored ale offers easy drinkability for the novice yet plenty of flavor for the discriminating connoisseur.

    IPA INDIA PALE ALE (Our Hoppiest)

    Mayflower IPA balances a powerful hop profile with full malt flavor to create a smooth brew with well-rounded bitterness. Four varieties of American hops lend a delightful piney flavor and fruity aroma.

    PORTER (Our Darkest)

    Mayflower Porter is a rich, complex brew that is smooth and full-flavored. Five varieties of malted barley provide notes of roasted coffee beans and bittersweet chocolate with a hint of smokiness.



    Here is the brewhouse… the grist mill is above the mash tun and to the right is the kettle.

    After chilling and it’s sent through the filter shown below it’s off to the nearby fermentation tanks doing yeoman duty turning the wort into ale.

    For the next few minutes Sarah Richardson (we met in the tasting room) and I will take you on a tour of the Mayflower Brewery.

    Cream Ale Taste-off in Portsmouth

    Here we have them ladies and gentlemen! The Cream Ales Cream Ale (4.5% abv 12 IBU) of Portsmouth Brewery! It’s early afternoon and bar-karma finds us two seats. It should be mentioned that the following contest had a preliminary that involved two tasty examples of the new brewer’s art. This cross-tasting calibration would be the excuse for the close attention to the following contest. No betting or wagering of any sort was encouraged, just expected. Now on to the feature event!

    On the left, and closest to the camera, is the drafted Cream Ale, only slightly out of focus. On the right hand side of this picture, in sharper focus, and basking in a halo of light, the cask-conditioned contender.

    The aromatic first round leaned to the more conditioned contender which I contend was due to the chill on the drafted contestant. The second round of aromatics seemed to confirm the first round observation. It was decided to skip the third round as the judges were thirsty. (Full disclosure… this contest is taking place after a four hour and fifteen minutes road-trip)

    The first sip of the conditioned contender was not as sparkling as the drafted contestant and the cellar temperature seemed a bit Caribbean. The second sip had the drafted contestant, with a serious sparkle advantage, attracting the taste judge’s attention. The third swig confirmed the judge’s first impression and as a result the Draft is awarded a TKO over a fine conditioned but just not as tactilely exciting contender.

    That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…

    How old is this Brooklyn Brown?

    The “Wall of Beers” is getting a bit dusty and I am procrastinating while supposed to be working on a book proposal. (Oh sweet book won’t you marry me?)

    This bottle was gathering so much dust I thought it had shrunk.

    But you all know that can’t happen.

    Today the brewery provides their products in 12 oz. “long necks”…

    So when did they bottle this particular run up in Utica?

    Any idea?
