    Sixth Annual July Good Beer Month™ Features Craft Beer Jam,

    Film Festival, Best of Boroughs

    Beer Sessions Radio™ and The Good Beer Seal are gearing up for the Sixth Annual July Good Beer Month™! We will be celebrating good beer all month long at the Good Beer Seal bars, as well as at WNYC’s The Greene Space, with our annual live Craft Beer Jam broadcasts. As we prepare to receive the official proclamation from Mayor de Blasio’s office, we are featuring several key events for the month, including the following:

    • Three sessions of the renowned Craft Beer Jam at WNYC's The Greene Space: Join Beer Sessions Radio™ host Jimmy Carbone for panels on July 9th, 16th and 23rd as beer luminaries such as Tommy Keegan (Keegan Ales), Kelly Taylor (KelSo Brewing), Mark Buford (Blue Point), and Augie Carton (Carton Brewing), among others, gather to discuss (and drink) with a live audience. 
    • A Beer Film Festival at Anthology Film Archives on July 29th with short films and videos curated by the Happy Hour Guys and Beer Nation TV, with beer from 508 Gastrobrewery brewmaster Chris Cuzme.
    • Kegs & Kluckers on July 14th: Just Food's annual fundraiser for The Chicken Project.
    • The return of Edible's Good Beer at 82 Mercer on July 31st where we will announce the 2014 Good Beer Seal Awards.

    In addition, this year’s July Good Beer Month™ will focus on the growth of new breweries coming online, particularly those in Queens and Brooklyn. Several bars and breweries will be doing simultaneous events on July 22nd featuring the best brews from the two boroughs. The Good Beer Seal will also be working with the NYC Brewers Guild to highlight events featuring locally-made brews.

    21st Amendment Brewery Rebels Again


    San Francisco, CA (July 2014) – Crisis. What Crisis? This July, 21st Amendment Brewery co-founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan are breaking out of Alcatraz – again – for the newest release of their Hop Crisis Imperial IPA. A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and many brewers were forced to skimp on hops, the folks at 21st Amendment decided there was only one thing to do. They made the biggest, hoppiest IPA they could imagine and then aged it in oak for good measure. And this year’s special release includes a double dry hopping regimen with new, experimental hops added to old favorites.

    “We love to experiment with the hops in this beer each year and it’s especially fun to see how they interact with the oak,” says brewmaster O’Sullivan. “This year we are using a new, yet to be named, experimental hop as well as a new Australian variety and some classics like Saaz, Amarillo and Citra.  Coming in at 9.7% alcohol, it’s really balanced with subtle layers of flavor.”

    “The Alcatraz reference on our package is about our alter egos and their quest to ‘Free the Hops’,” noted Freccia. “And it’s a great opportunity to have fun with this beer on every level. A daring escape through the sewer pipe, surfing monster waves while being chased by a great white shark and a high speed getaway on the San Francisco cable car are all part of the adventure,” he adds. “Somehow I end up wearing a dress at the end of all of it, though, which I’m still not sure about.”

    Hop Crisis is part of 21st Amendment’s Insurrection Series of special, limited release beers.     The outlook for wine sales is relatively rosy, but restaurant customers are opting for cocktails and craft brews when dining out for the "cool" factor, according to a survey conducted by Legal Sea Foods Beverage Director and Master of Wine Sandy Block.     A taste of… Hop Crisis

    Preface: This brew was sent to me by 21st Amendment Brewery. These notes have not been influenced by reading promotional material or any other review of this brew.

    I am including this preface to inform the reader of any and all circumstances that might be conceived of a creating a biased review or a conflict of interest regarding the choice of words used in the following review. I could go on and on with semi-legal jargon but I guess you will just have to trust me eh?

    The following are my tasting notes:

    Appearance: The head on this beer is almost pure white with a touch of sandy brown constructed of very small to medium sized bubbles. The carbonation is emphatic. The Belgian lace isn’t built well but is well knit.

    Aroma: The first impression is sweet. The second impression is of very floral scents combining a number of very aromatic sensations related to violets and Lilac. The third nosedive reveals a touch of alcohol but the floral impressions are almost overwhelming… but not a bad way.

    Mouth feel: This is a full-bodied beer without being obese, and most pleasant.

    Flavor: The first flavor impression is of a toasted malt but with a quick stab of hop spike. The second taste revealed greater depth to both the malt sweetness and that sharp hop tang. The third swig allows both the hop and the malt to join together. The combination in no way allows the almost 10% by volume to either interfere with the enjoyment of this beer flavor wise or in the warmth that is imparts after it is been sipped.

    Finish: An unusually smooth finish to this beer. With such relatively high alcohol content it could very easily create an intentioned crisis involved in a tasting.

    Comments: The popular word used to call this beer would be “extreme” beer. However, the flavors of both the hops in the mall are so well-balanced I almost wish they had been able to knock the alcohol content down to at least 4% by volume so that both should be appreciated. I would suggest this particular beverage be enjoyed after a full meal and before a late-night conversation on honor (see Lord Jim) and cigars.

    A taste of… Fireside Chat Winter Spiced Ale

    21st Amendment Brewery 563 2nd St San Francisco, California 94107 (415) 369-0900(415) 369-0900Preface: This is the third of four cans of brew sent to me as part of a promotional plan by 21st Amendment Brewery that involved an online tasting. These notes have not been influenced by reading promotional material or any other review of this brew.

    The following are my tasting notes:

    Appearance: A deep garnet-red brew with full carbonation that creates a rocky light sandy brown colored head that holds up remarkably well for a beer that is 7.9% alcohol by volume.

    Aroma: The first impression is and aroma similar to mincemeat pie. The second visit brings in aromas of prunes and red cherries. A third nosedive brings out very slight undercurrents of licorice.

    Mouth feel: This is a full bodied beer with a surprisingly light mouth feel.

    Flavor: After the first refreshing sensation of the children will there is a distinct pruner flavor that is challenged by the aforementioned mincemeat pie sensations both and they aroma and in the flavor. The second sip is actually drier than the first when a slightly tannic undertone is sensed. The third swig reminds you that this is actually a beer when roasted malt and a familiar hop Tang are experienced.

    Finish: There's a lot of raisin in the finish and you might notice a particular warm sensation at the back of the throat. It's also a real tummy warmer.

    Comments: The pictorial representation of Pres. Franklin Roosevelt on the can certainly conveys a sense of comfort particularly when you turn the can one quarter turn and notice that the president is speaking to an Elf. But I digress…

    The spice flavors in this beer are not overpowering, in fact they are rather subtle. The malts seem to be the real winner in the flavor profile of this brew. However it is not overwhelming or cloying. Sitting here on a fine late April morning it seems to be an incongruous brew. However, on a snowy Saturday afternoon I can think of nothing better than a piece of cheddar enjoyed with a can of this beer.
